New "Height Loss" Pill REDUX Promises to Shrink Adults by Inches

A controversial new drug that can reduce an adult's height by several inches is nearing approval from the Food and Drug Administration after years of secret testing. The purple hexagonal pill, called REDUX, could soon be available by prescription at a cost of $799 per pill.

REDUX works by temporarily suppressing growth hormones and cartilage development in adults. The effects are not permanent, but can last for 6-12 months depending on the dosage. After that time, normal growth and height are restored.

"For the first time, we have a safe, effective way for adults to temporarily reduce their height," said Dr. Marcus Klein, lead scientist at Reducor Pharmaceuticals which makes REDUX. "This fulfills a long-unmet need for people who want to experience life at a shorter stature."

In clinical trials involving over 500 male participants aged 18-30, REDUX was shown to reduce height by an average of 4-6 inches after 3 months of treatment. The maximum height reduction was 8 inches.

"Being 5'9" instead of 6'5" was an eye-opening experience," said Tom Bauer, 27, a shrinking man who took part in the REDUX trials in Cleveland. "Suddenly everything from public transportation to shopping aisles was built for my height instead of feeling cramped. I highly recommend REDUX to any tall person who wants to see how the other half lives."

"The change was fairly gradual, maybe a couple of inches a month, so it wasn't too shocking," added Bauer. "But by the fourth month, I was at my full reduction of 8 inches and it felt pretty natural, like this had always been my height. I was always self-conscious about my height and would stoop over when walking down the road, not wanting to draw attention to myself. I'm more comfortable being an average height. Hasn't stopped my buddies from making fun of me though. Most of them are taller than me now and my new nickname is 'lil guy'. I kinda like it."

However, not all participants had such positive experiences. "The height loss happened way too fast for me and threw off my balance and coordination for a few weeks," said Jared Wilkins, 24, another trial participant. "Everyday activities like driving and playing sports became really difficult until my body adjusted."

Critics have raised concerns about the high cost of REDUX as well as the ethics of allowing people to change their basic physical characteristics for non-medical reasons.

"A $799 pill that only lasts for months seems incredibly wasteful and a huge profit-grab by Big Pharma," said Dr. Rajesh Gupta, a bioethicist at Yale University. "Not to mention the potential for abuse by, say, parents seeking to stunt their children's growth through off-label use."

Reducor has not yet announced an official release date or pricing details for REDUX. But the company expects FDA approval within the next 6 months based on the successful trial results.
