A 16,000-word illustrated fairy tale of giant desire: Jack climbs a magic beanstalk into a realm of giants, and into the hands of Lorn, a giant who has spent years hiding the same longing.

The story

Above a forgotten village lies a realm of giants. Below it, Jack lives by the work of his hands, keeping his hopes for a different life to himself. At eighteen he begins to admit what he wants: the love of another man, and a place in a world far larger than his own.

Five years later, a stranger arrives with seven extraordinary beans and an impossible promise. Overnight a beanstalk punches through the clouds, and Jack climbs it.

Beyond the clouds, Lorn has spent his adult years hiding a longing he cannot explain. When a tiny man crests the beanstalk into his world, both men must decide whether the lives they imagined alone can become something they choose together, sealed by an old ritual of blood, oil and seed.

From the story

From the pouch he tipped seven beans, glossy black with crimson veins.

“Seeds,” he said. “For planting.”

Jack crouched beside the blanket. “What do they grow?”

“A way out, if that is what you need. A way up, if you have the courage.” …

“Up where?”

The traveller glanced at the clouds.

“There are places where a man your size would seem very small indeed.”
